Jos Mahon Artist

My work is inspired by the experience of ‘being out there’. Drawn to wild places, living in North Pennine hills, walking and painting expeditions to remote highland and island areas - these are the places of my drawings and paintings.

I need to be there, outdoors, braving the elements - working ‘on the spot’,. Here I love to watch the weather move and change and with the immediacy of paint and pastels, I respond rapidly to the thrill of a storm, the rage of the sea and wind or flight of sea bird winging past.

Recent creative projects have enabled me to combine my love of walking and painting outdoors, from tramping the upland moors of the local North Pennines, to backpacking the length of Britain. On the journey I sketch and paint, absorbing and responding to the unique place and weather.

Books

I now have two books about a trek I made up the country from Land's End to John o' Groats with my husband and our faithful canine companion Barney. The walk of nearly 1400 miles took 4 months to complete.

The first, Barney's Long Walk, is based on my diary and follows our journey as we made our way north. The book includes photographs and paintings of the landscape we experienced.

The second, Painting on the End to End Trail, contains 134 paintings selected from a total of over 280 made on the trek.

Exhibition

I now have an exhibition of the work 'The End to End Trail' which includes 126 of the paintings along with supporting information. Please see my Exhibitions page for more details. UKHillwalking.com have an article about the trek and the exhibition.
